Orange!

Wow, just squeaking in here with my August RSC2018 blocks! I spent the better part of the month working on another secret project--soon to be revealed. But once that was finished, I sat myself down and made these blocks all in one day. I used the How My Bathrooms Got Cleaned technique, so win for both my sewing and my house. No pictures of the fresh bathrooms, but here are the blocks.

And some close-ups. (Ooh, maybe too close up. That's a little fuzzy, isn't it?)

There are so many different kinds of orange, aren't there? My oldest ones are more dusty-peachy. I have a lot that tend toward rust, but I left out most of those. Maybe that tells me about which fabrics need the heave-ho from my stash.

Then there are ones that lean more toward cheddar. That polka dot strip is a little jarring.

My current favorites are the clear oranges. I jammed this block full of them.

See the third strip down? I hoarded that fabric for years. It was part of a collection of fabrics that were inspired by the endpapers (or end fabrics?) on the inside covers of old books. The dark blue strip is my favorite "outlier" strip this month.

I have had a variable relationship with orange. I did not like it in the 70's, when it was often paired with brown and rust. Now I like it a lot as a pop of color. In fact, I used it in two of my grandkids' baby quilts. But these blocks are just a little much for me. Too much orange all together.

I found myself just piecing to get it done, but mostly I'm okay with the result, especially when the blocks are included with the rest of my string blocks.

I sneaked lime green into two strips on this one because one was mostly orange anyway. There's another "endpaper" fabric in the lower right corner.

This collection is really growing. I had a hard time fitting it on my living room floor. I played with a spiral layout this month.

Only two more colors left. Because the next two months might be a little unpredictable for me (grandbaby coming any day now), I might take a page out of Louise's book and zoom ahead over the next few days. (If you read her blog, you'll know she she has a tendency to go to the head of the class--ahead of the class?--on QALs.)

Oh, hey! As I'm linking up, I see I guessed right. The color for September is dark blue/dark neutrals. I got my blues all cut up last night.

I'm linking up with Angela at soscrappy for ScrapHappy Saturday and with Cynthia at Quilting is More Fun than Housework for Oh, Scrap! on Sunday.

I hope August was a fun quilting month for you, orange or not.

I didn't really think I had many orange colors until I took a box of orange/yellow to cut for a scrap quilt - more than I thought I had

Your picture of all of your string blocks together is just stunning, Janine! It is always interesting how many different shades of colors there are, but everything seems to work in a string block!

Oh my, your oranges are lovely. The quilt is coming together nicely! And I think you’ve hit on the perfect name for your quilt - Outlier!

Thanks, Janine, for showing the closeup views. It’s such fun to check them out and see if I recognize them. For someone who is not fond of orange, you really have quite a collection. The spiral is a great idea. Keep up the good work!

Maybe you don't love orange, but you have a great stash of it! I love seeing all your blocks together now, with their little extra stripes of contrasting colors. That spiral layout is neat! And you know me well. I've already jumped ahead on the rest of the year's RSC colors on at least one of my projects. I'm just itching to get it finished!! :)

Hoping to hear about that new grandbaby soon!
